Does Length Matter? Determinants of Professional Golf Tournament Success

by Martin Putterman

Abstract

Using PGA Shotlink data for 2003 – 2007 we investigate which shot making factors such as driving distance, greens in regulation and scrambling percentage predict success in major tournaments (Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship). We use factor analysis to reduce the number of potential predictors and multiple regression to investigate the relationship between shot making and outcomes. We also explore whether different aspects of performance impact outcomes in different tournaments.
